As specialist legal recruitment consultants we obtain lots of calls from recently graduated or admitted lawyers, sometimes applying to us for roles but also trying to find general advice concerning how to create the transfer to the industry. Unfortunately, as there are many graduates out there so when most law firms do their graduate recruiting directly, we aren’t in a position to assist graduates ourselves to find a role. However, we all do possess some advice for graduate lawyers seeking their first role. Here are some ideas and invest time in your search and we’re sure you are going to succeed.
So first up, the not so good news… You might be beginning from scratch. By way of example, should you have had a job pre-law you will likely be earning exactly like other graduates once you start, not more. Also, legal recruiters can’t allow you to. Firms don’t pay us to locate graduates. There way too many looking and they can find them easily from their floated resumes or clerkships. Advertisements don’t offer an easy path in a firm either. Firms often don’t advertise for graduate roles, simply because they hire via their clerkships and traineeships, and advertisements for junior lawyers actually mean they desire anyone who has a year or so of post-admission experience. While it is recommended to apply to a lawyer direct for a junior role there isn’t much point applying to legal recruitment – if an agency will help graduates it is going to say it very clearly from the ad!
In case you are still studying, it’s important (if inconvenient) to recognise that, uni is important. Everything you study, and how well you need to do, will matter for the first job. If you are academically inclined that’s great news; otherwise, then at a minimum, don’t fail a law subject. Try to avoid withdrawing from the subject and never fail a topic twice. In case you are missing lectures and aren’t committed, have a year off or maybe more till you are committed. You only purchase one chance to get good grades. In case you have plenty of fails in law then you should wear this throughout your employment. On the whole, the larger or higher prestigious the firm, the better weight they may get for academics, and the leading firms give a great deal of weight to academics.
Better still than not failing – get good grades. Study hard or if perhaps not difficult then smart. No problem with picking electives that provide easy grades or that have fewer contact hours. Make certain many of the subjects one does are in your neighborhood useful but you may want to throw in a few that will lighten your load. Have smart friends at uni. Smart friends can assist your GPA and provide you with tips as you go along. Beyond that, take into account the institution. If you are at the lower ranked university and will proceed to a greater ranked institution practice it, change universities. Firms take this into mind.
Secondly, make an effort find some good practical knowledge in the region/s of great interest you may have. Around it is possible to. Actually, greater than that you were thinking – double it and then much more. Do it paid or unpaid and get it done well. It can pay off, massively. Not doing it will not repay. Massively. Try to get clerkships especially, and as much as you can. In the event you haven’t done a clerkship it’s harder to acquire articles, and if you don’t begin with articles then a larger plus more prestigious firms will be a lot less very likely to hire you. (They don’t need to while they have lawyers who did clerkships/traineeships already before you from the queue.) If you can’t get a job within a lawyer do an Associateship, however, unless you need to be a barrister don’t choose an Associateship more than a law office. Employers will most likely presume that lawyers that do Associateships want to be barristers. When you get offered articles/traineeship and it’s in the area of great interest drive them. Don’t execute a professional practice course as an alternative to them, even if the articles offered are in a small firm.
Thirdly, learning how the marketplace works plus your position inside will assist you to target your likely audience successfully. For those who have honours academics coming from a top law school, have some pre-admission experience and are trying to get articles/training contract or clerkships with leading firms then that’s great. However, given how competitive the market is you may have to go further – apply also to mid-sized firms and boutiques that practice inside your regions of interest. In case the industry is not booming then also go a lttle bit beyond that! When you don’t have fantastic academics then when you could still focus on the large firms, you should definitely target small and medium-sized firms as well. If your academics are poor then carry on down the list! The worst scenario we hear of is how graduates underestimate your competition on the market and simply pertain to firms who don’t interview them.
Then, after you have the academic and practical aspects under control, and know your marketability, you have to do more work. Unless you are some of the lucky ones who may have a deal of articles or possibly a graduate role, anticipate to give your very best at acquiring a job. If the industry is booming and you have great grades then all fine and dandy, however when it isn’t, or maybe if you don’t, then tackle it like it is a fulltime job.
